My daughter Carley, came to me not too long ago and asked my why we didn’t offer a Lip Balm. She showed me the one she was using. And I recoiled at the junk they put in them. A lot of Mineral Oil and petrolatum and waxes of unknown origin (can you say animal derived?)With artificial fragrances and colorants. And who knows what other ingredients not even on the label? The disclosure laws are so lax.
OK well it’s just for the lips. Why does it matter? What really makes lip skin so different? Why not just use a moisturizer?

The skin of the lip, with three to five cellular layers, is very thin compared to typical face skin, which has up to 16 layers. With light skin color, the lip skin contains less melanocytes (cells which produce melanin pigment , which give skin its color). Because of this, the blood vessels appear through the skin of the lips, which leads to their notable red coloring. With darker skin color this effect is less prominent, as in this case the skin of the lips contains more melanin and thus is visually thicker. The lip skin is not hairy, and does not have sweat glands or sebaceous glands. Therefore, lip skin does not have, the usual protection layer of sweat and body oils which keep the skin smooth, kill pathogens, and regulate warmth. For these reasons, the lips dry out faster and become chapped more easily.

Looking at what was on the market, as far as we were concerned, there was nothing out there to copy. Even the so called natural ones weren’t very special. So we took it upon ourselves to develop the very best lip balm we could develop. Like all of our products we don’t skimp on ingredients. The key of course is finding the exact right combination of ingredients to get the maximum results of soft healthy lips. We already knew what the healing benefits of Sea Buckthorn oil was close to amazing. And Borage oil also has quite a few healing properties. And Squalane is remarkable skin product too. So we built this lip balm around those oils to maximize their benefits.

We discovered that a good lip balm has to have the right mix of solids, semi-solids, liquid oils and waxes. In precise percentages. There are literally hundreds to choose from, so I knew this wouldn’t be easy. Lip Balms do not use water. A requirement has to be the ability to last on your lips and gradually deposit the nurturing oils on your lips so they stay moist and healthy. Or if chapped, to heal quickly. The mix has to be just right.

There are no dyes, colorants, or artificial fragrances.

This product is about as natural as you can get. No animal testing either.

As you will discover, we did something right here. Carley loves it, I love it and we’ve sent out some to test it and they love it. We’ve got to get this on the market because they are starting to post comments on our feedback forum about it.

We spare no expense in the quality of the ingredients we use.

Ingredients

Keep in mind the primary ingredients used in other lip balms typically cost, at the most, a few dollars a gallon. Everything we use is many many times that!
These are the finest ingredients you will ever see in a lip balm.

INGREDIENTS (in order of prominence):

Mango Butter: Mango butter is taken from the seed kernels of the fruit of the mango tree. It is similar in texture to shea butter and is softer than cocoa butter. It has a very light yellow/mango color. High in unsaponifiables. It gives products a luxurious feel. We use a natural variety. We needed a semi-solid butter for this formulation. We found in the tests we ran Mango proved to be an unusual, but best choice. We buy it in 55 pound cubes that cost about $250. This is the least expensive ingredient.

Camelina oil: This oil is also known as false flax or gold-of-pleasure and is high in Omega-3 linolenic acid. Records of plant cultivation date back as far as the Iron Age as the oil was used as a source of fuel as well as a skin moisturizer. Research shows that Camelina oil has good skin softening properties. It is emollient, has good spreading properties, provides lubricity in both hair and skin preparations, and improves skin elasticity. Only the very best lip balms would ever consider using Camelina. Costs about $60 a gallon

Organic Cocoa Butter: This is the really good stuff (and more expensive too)! Pressed cocoa butter is the fat which is obtained by hydraulic pressing of cocoa nib or cocoa mass (cocoa liquor) obtained from cocoa beans. It is either filtered or centrifuged. This is an all natural process and no solvents are used. We use cocoa butter for its firmness and we believe it really is essential to make a quality lip balm.

Beeswax

Jojoba Oil: Jojoba is very similar in composition to human natural skin oils. It technically is not an oil, but a wax. It penetrates the skin rapidly to nourish it; also softens and moisturizes mature and dry skin. Jojoba helps to heal inflamed skin conditions such as psoriasis or any form of dermatitis, helps control acne and oily scalps. Since it has antioxidant properties, it can keep other oils from going rancid. We use it here to help the Sea buckthorn and Borage healing oils move deeper into the skin which they won’t normally do on their own. We use the natural yellow variety. Costs about $50 a gallon.

Meadowfoam Seed Oil: Meadowfoam oil is used here due to its stability, lubricity and ability to stay on the skin. Meadowfoam Seed Oil’s skin feel is distinct from many other natural oils. This is due to the novel chemistry of its fatty acids, which contain more carbon atoms than fatty acids common in most edible oils. As a result, Meadowfoam Seed oil provides good emolliency without being overly greasy. $100 a gallon.

Sea Buckthorn oil derived from the fruit: with 30-40% palmitic acid, 22-33% palmitoleic acid, and 1-6% of unsaponifiable ingredients such as carotenoids, alkanols, tocopherols and sterols. This oil is the ultimate antioxidant for healing. It is a rich source of carotenoids, flavonoids, tocopherols and vitamins E & C. The fruit is high in EFA and other rare lipids, amino acids and a vitamin C concentration higher than that found in oranges or kiwi. At about $1000 a gallon, it is one of the most expensive botanicals. You won’t find this oil in many products. And if you do it will be in such tiny amounts as to be insignificant. The percentage we use is pretty high.

Borage Oil: Borage seed oil is clear and slightly thick with very little odor. It contains an abundance of gamma linoleic acid (GLA), an essential fatty acid that the body uses to manufacture prostaglandins––hormone like substances that balance and regulate cellular activity. It reduces the aging process of the skin and reverses damage from ultraviolet rays. This oil is used to treat PMS, endometriosis, and menopausal discomforts, as well as for psoriasis and eczema. We believe for a lip balm this is a perfect use. Borage seed oil costs over $200 a gallon.

Squalane , Olive Oil. Pure vegetable sourced. There are many who tell us this is as important to this formulation as the Borage and Sea Buckthorn. Squalane is a special formulation that sinks rapidly into the skin and heals all sorts of skin problems. Originally developed from the liver of a special type of shark. The all vegetable form we use is as effective. And this also costs over $200 a gallon.

Another masterpiece of skin care I don't want to live without, so happy to have found this company!  It's true, this balm doesn't just cover my lips, the moisture sinks in and lasts.  Very helpful when I'm constantly sipping on a straw.  When I accidentally get some in my mouth, it tastes good!  And I don't have to worry about that, knowing that the ingredients are high-quality.  Thank you!
